HISTORY OF FINLAY PARK

The iconic Finlay Park has carried many names and served many roles since the 1800s. Known at one point as Seaboard Park, at other times Sidney Park, and with other names in between, this almost 18-acre green space in the heart of downtown Columbia has evolved right alongside the city itself. For generations, the land stretching from Gadsden Street to Assembly Street and from Taylor Street to Laurel Street has captivated residents and visitors alike, providing a place for community, connection, and creativity.

Sidney Park: A Vision Takes Root

The story of Finlay Park begins in the mid 1800s, when Columbia leaders envisioned a place where residents could gather, relax, and enjoy nature near the heart of the growing city. Known then as Sidney Park and named for Councilman Algernon Sidney Johnson, the space was thoughtfully designed with trees, pathways, and open areas that welcomed families and neighbors. It quickly became a cherished destination, offering a peaceful retreat just steps away from downtown.

The Era of Seaboard Park

By the early 1900s, the area took on a new identity as Seaboard Park after the land was sold to the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. Warehouses and rail operations replaced the original green space, and the site’s early character faded from view. Yet even during this period of industrial use, the location remained central to Columbia’s landscape and continued to symbolize the potential for future public space.

Restoration and a New Name

Decades later, the City renewed its commitment to restoring a vibrant urban park on this historic site. The space was brought back as Sidney Park in 1991 and soon renamed Finlay Park in honor of former Mayor Kirkman Finlay, whose leadership helped inspire its return. This new chapter marked an important turning point, reconnecting residents to a meaningful piece of Columbia’s past while creating a beloved setting for recreation, concerts, and community gatherings.

A Modern Reimagining

In the late 2010s, the City embarked on its most ambitious effort yet to restore and reimagine the park for future generations. The City began formulating a comprehensive revitalization plan for Finlay Park with formal planning, design development, and public engagement efforts accelerating between 2019 and 2021.A comprehensive revitalization plan, supported by community partners and guided by a vision of accessibility, safety, and shared experience, set the stage for modern amenities, restored water features, expanded green space, and dedicated staff who would care for the park every day. The groundbreaking in 2023 celebrated not only construction but also Columbia’s continued investment in community life.

Finlay Park Today

Today, Finlay Park stands renewed as one of Columbia’s signature public spaces, an inclusive and welcoming destination for families, neighbors, and visitors. In 2025, the City celebrated the grand re opening of the revitalized park, marking a major milestone in Columbia’s continued investment in community life. With restored landscapes, engaging amenities, and year round programming, the park reflects our city’s spirit of connection and progress. Together, we honor its past while embracing a bright and active future in the heart of the Capital City.
